Institutional Research (DIEMON)

Diemon is an independent music institution which was created by the hip hop artists Russ and Bugus. It was formed around 2007 although the pair had worked together before this. They aimed to create an institution which they could independently ran. Russ produces, mixes, writes and engineers the music and is therefore not reliant on other people for his success. Also because of the role of the internet they are able to distribute their music on platforms such us Soundcloud, Spotify, YouTube and therefore are not reliant on any institutions to distribute their music. Russ also recently partnered with Columbia as he released his debut album 'There is really a wolf' to help with the distribution and promotion and the artist has since had a huge increase in social media following showing how much power the big music institutions have and how much they can influence an artists success. Although Russ has partnered with Columbia he still independently produces his music and has recently released two platinum singles showing the benefits of not singing to a record label.

What has this post taught me?

This post has taught me about an independent record labels and how they are a viable option for an artist, however backing from a record label can really help an artist starting up so I would look for backing.
