R&P 14: Institutional Research (SONY)
Institutional Research (SONY)
Sony Music Entertainment is an American music company owned by Sony. The company was first founded in 1929 as American Record Corporation and renamed Columbia Recording Corporation in 1938. In 1966, the company was renamed to become CBS Records. Sony Corporation bought the company in 1987 and renamed it once again to Sony Music Entertainment in 1991. Sony Music UK is owned by Sony Music Entertainment in the United Kingdom. Since 2014, Jason Iley has been Chairman and CEO of Sony Music UK. Although Sony Music Entertainment own Sony Music UK it acts as a stand-alone company and manages it's own artists who are primarily UK based. Sony picked up 5 awards in the 2015 BRIT awards which was their best performance at the time until in 2017 they picked up 7 out of the 11 awards.
What kind of artists do they have under the record label?
They mainly focus on pop artists as companies like this are typically in it purely for the money and therefore signing popular artists is crucial to the companies success. Our artist is not mainstream so therefore Sony probably isn't the best institution for our artist.
What has this post taught me?
This post has taught me about the kind of institution that Sony is and the kind of artists which the have under them, although the company is clearly big and successful it doesn't match my artists demands because an element of artistic licence is taken away and also the company may not be willing to work with Eden because they typically work with bigger artists.
