R&P 27: Music Video Analysis (James Arthur - Say You Won't Let Go)

James Arthur - Say You Won't Let Go

I choose to analyse this music video as the style of music is very similar to our artists and watching it I felt the music video really connected to the song.

The first shots are often of the artist just to establish a connection to the audience with the familiarity of the face as shown with this close up of Arthur.

As there is not a lot of eye contact with the camera in this video it is conveyed to the audience that the lyrics should be prioritised over the 'star' persona of the artist.

This is a great example of making the ordinary seem extraordinary as the high angle shot of the guitar gives us a whole new perspective.

We had mostly seen medium shots and close ups of the artist thus far and this long shot gives us a different view of the artist as we are able to gain an understanding of  his isolation and this heightens his music and the sympathy we can feel for him.

Once again this medium/close up shot emphasises the importance of the lyrics over the artist, variety of shots also make the video interesting because the audience can't just predict the shots going up.

This shot is so close that you can see the vibrations of the guitar shots which really connects you to the song, along with this the shot keeps to the interesting visual style created through angled shots.

What has this post taught me?
Once again the convention of performance is used outlining that this is a convention I should adhere to. This music video has some narrative elements which I could consider for my music video.
